Casserole

Last week, while I was at work, the inmates were having some kind of enchilada casserole for dinner. Some of the other officers were eating it too. It looked pretty good but, I was feeling queasy that night. Tonight I decided to give it a go and make it myself. I layered corn tortillas smothered in enchilada sauce with cooked chicken, corn and cheese. It was sort of a Mexican lasagna. It was really good. We had rice and guacamole with it.

My mom got her new phone in the mail today. Tomorrow I will go over and help her get it all set up. Today I did laundry and cleaned. Tomorrow I am going off to work. I am sure I won’t have a dull day.

Happiness

I have been working a lot. I like my job, but it is much more physical than I am used to. One thing is for sure, it is never ever boring. The blisters on my heels are healing nicely and my boots are broken in. Carolynn and I are breaking in a second pair by wearing them around the house. This way, as soon as they begin to hurt my feet, I can take them off. Last week, my hours were so all over the place that it made it difficult to get anything done. Now that my training period is over, my schedule has evened out. Unfortunately, I really don’t think that two weeks of classroom training and one week of on the job training is enough. There are four institutions and hundreds of posts. There was no way to learn every one. The training is not totally complete however. I still have to go to three weeks of training at the national training center in Georgia. I am not sure when that will be yet. Until then, I am asking a lot of questions, maybe staying late on my own time to learn some, or coming early on my own time.

I got my first paycheck and my recruitment bonus. I was so happy. I no longer have to worry about my financial situation. I immediately went on a bit of a shopping spree. Mostly I got to shop for me. All these months, I made sure, with my parents help, that my kids never did without. I regularly did without, but they did not. The first thing I purchased was a washer and dryer set. Finally, I no longer have to go to the scary Laundromat and spend hours trying to wash clothes. Now I can get up and throw a load in and go about my business. I never have to worry about clean uniforms. I never have to hear Catherine tell my about how she has no clean clothes to wear. There will be no more sock shortages, towel shortages or underwear shortages. I am still catching up with the laundry that had piled up. But I no longer mind. I can wash and dry while watching TV and writing.

The next thing I purchased was a brand new laptop. My old one, though it works, has seen better days. It makes a loud humming noise all the time. One of the mouse buttons stick. One of the Shift keys stick. Since I rarely buy things just for me, I splurged. I got an Asus. It is very cool looking. I spent a few days transferring things from my old laptop to my new one. I am still installing and moving things to my new laptop, but I got everything out of the old one. I am enjoying my new one a lot. It is bigger and nicer and cooler. I don’t have any idea what I am going to do with my old one. It still works, if you can stand a couple of sticky keys and the humming. Carolynn already has a laptop and Catherine has a desktop. David has a desktop too. His monitor went out a couple of weeks ago, and he was using Catherine’s because she was grounded from hers anyway. I was in the Best Buy purchasing my new laptop and I saw a nice monitor for $100 because it was out of the box. It was a 19” LCD wide screen. He is enjoying it and Catherine can get hers back. Anyway, that still leaves my old laptop as an extra. Any ideas?

Something else I purchased just for me was a girly new bed set. I love it. I am giving my room a very girly French look. I still need some more bedroom furniture, but I like how it looks so far. I got some candles and a little fountain. I had some Asian stuff in there, but I moved that into the bathroom.

I got a new phone. I was due for an upgrade and I finally went in to see what I could get. I finally decided on the Voyager. My mom was due for an upgrade and she got that one too. My dad got the new Envy2. I gave my old phone to Catherine. She had a number, but she lost her phone quite a while ago. Anyway, so far I really enjoy my new phone.

Finally, Trisha sent me some soap that she and Casey made so I could try them out and see what I thought so far. I haven’t tried any of them yet, but I plan to try and get them all tried and stuff today. I like the way most of them smell.

Okay, so that should catch us up for now.

Sleep Is Over Rated

These shift changes are going to be the end of me. My feet are feeling better. I got some better bandages and am sticking with my old boots. The safety toes in my newer boots are too hard. My shirts came in the mail on Tuesday so I am a fully uniformed member of the team. I am learning a lot of stuff. Tomorrow I am working in the evening. My mom is picking up Carolynn after her band practice and then watching the girls for me in the evening.

We made homemade pizza for dinner tonight. It was nice. Now I am going to get some sleep and start again tomorrow.

Working 9 to 5

That is not something I am doing this week. I worked 8 to 4 this week. Then I worked midnight to 8 am, and then I will work that one again tonight. Then the 2 pm to 10 pm shift. Then the 4 pm to midnight shift. I am exhausted. My boots are going to be the death of me. The lack of sleep, combined with the pain in my feet gave me a migraine that made me want to quit my job. It was awful. My head was throbbing, my stomach was churning and I felt like I might pass out. However, I am tough. I sucked it up and made it through my shift and I came home and slept until three this afternoon. I will go back tonight. Tonight will be better.

We made lasagna for dinner. We had garlic bread and Caesar salad too. It was fabulous. Too bad my stomach was still a little queasy from the migraine.

We still cannot find the cat. We have looked everywhere. I reported her lost to animal control as well as the local humane society. I checked the animal shelters. It is very upsetting. I really liked that cat. It is Carolynn’s cat. She has been very worried. She has a microchip and was wearing a collar with her name and phone number. I hope we can find her soon. She is older and it has been cold. I hope she is somewhere safe. Perhaps someone found her and loved her so much they kept her. She is a very good cat. I still have no idea how she could have gotten out.

Yesterday Carolynn played her first band concert. She was very good. Check my mom's blog for pictures. I forgot my camera.

Well, I am going to rest some more before I get off to work. I swear I will try to write some more meaningful stuff soon. I will also try to answer any e-mails and stuff soon.

The Downey Softness

… was not present in my new uniform pants. I got them in the mail on Friday. I did not wash them since I do not own a washer and dryer. They were itchy and gave me a rash. My new boots were stiff and gave me huge blisters. Nevertheless, I made it through my first day. Now, I have two days off.

The girls spent the day with my mom. She took them shopping and to a movie. Catherine is in a little trouble. She was supposed to shower and be ready when my mom arrived, and she was not. I told her to shower and she did not. She put on the same dirty clothes. I hung a sign in the bathroom to remind her what needs to be done and she didn’t follow directions. Therefore, when I got home, I made her shower and do some chores.

Carolynn wasn’t dressed and ready either, but she is having a rough day. Cleo, her cat, is missing. Carolynn and David saw her yesterday morning. We were getting ready to leave and we could not find her. We figured she was just hiding. She does that. She does not like to go outside. No one saw her go outside. Therefore, we left. When we got home last night, she was not here. We looked everywhere, but it was dark and she is dark. Today David and the girls looked everywhere, but we have not found her. The girls thought that they heard her this evening, but again, it was dark. I know we will find her soon. We rescued her from the pound. She is a tough kitty.

We made burritos for dinner. They were so good. My mom made beef noodle. I will eat some tomorrow.

My parents and Grandpa are going to Pala tomorrow. I am sure they will have fun.

The Justice League

My uniforms have started to arrive. All I am missing is my shirts. My jacket says Department of Justice. Catherine said it says Justice League, you know, like the super heroes comic. Now that my class is finished, and I passed with the highest score in the class, I now start officially. I work a variety of shifts this week; some day, some evening, and some over night. I get Monday and Tuesday off. Workweeks run Sunday through Saturday. I have today off too. Tomorrow I work a day shift.

Today I am taking Catherine to softball sign ups. I have a few errands to run. We will clean the house. We are having lasagna for dinner. Tomorrow we are having burritos. I just have to zip over to my brother’s house to get my pot.

That is all for now.

Rechargeable

My car battery died again. It was the original one that came in the car. I got that car in February 2005. Most car batteries last only 3 years max. Therefore, my mom had to come to the rescue this time. She drove me to work, picked me up from work, and called AAA to come start the car so I could go buy a new battery. Now I am all set.

This week has been much more difficult that last week. Last week, we sat around and learned from books. This week, we are out doing some on the job training. There are some interesting people in my line of work. Enough said. I learned quite a few more swear words and interesting ways to combine them too. If you do not laugh about it, you will go nuts.

I think it is my sense of humor that keeps me sane most of the time. I can always find humor in a situation. Not just at work, but all that time unemployed, I probably would have been nutty as a fruitcake… Well nuttier than usual. In addition, much like today, when the car is broken and I have to get to work. I could have freaked out, but instead I just got help. That is what people do. If you need help, ask for it. People who try to take it all on themselves are the people that have heart attacks at young ages, never have fun, and are miserable and unhappy. I never want to be one of those people. Sure, I want to be self sufficient, but I am not an island. I do not need help for everything, but I certainly could not have gotten to this place alone or without my sense of humor.

Tomorrow is my last day of classes. Friday we have weapons introduction. Then we are on the schedule for real. We will shadow people for a while, and then they shove us in on our own.

My uniforms still have not arrived. Most will be here on Friday. I need to wear them. My boots came in and I have not had a chance to go get them. Tomorrow I will.

That is all for now people. Until I return…

Chicken On Sunday

Today we went to my parent’s house and made the world’s biggest pot of chicken noodle soup. My Grandpa bought the biggest pot I had ever seen for the soup. We made the homemade noodles. It was very good. I brought some home so I can take it for lunch tomorrow. While I was at my mom’s I did a few loads of laundry. I cannot wait to get my own washer and dryer. Nevertheless, for now, I have clean slacks to wear to work this week. After this week, we start wearing our uniforms.

The girls go back to school tomorrow. I am glad they are going. It is easier to keep Catherine focused when she has a scheduled routine. Carolynn misses her friends.

Tomorrow I am off to work. I like that.

Survival

I made it through my first week of training. It certainly is not dull. It is a little scary. I ordered my uniforms. I ordered shirts, pants, a tie, and jackets. I ordered my utility belt. I bought black socks and plain underwear at Wal-Mart. I went to the Boot Barn to buy my boots. They had lots to choose from. I got the girl who works there to help me. The problem I was having was finding a pair small enough. She said I would have to order them. The first pair I picked I could not even order in my size. I finally picked one out and they will be there on Tuesday for me to pick up. I got dress shoes on clearance at Wal-Mart. They are plain black. I will not have to wear my dress ones very often.

That horrible woman at the pet shop finally paid me. I had to file a complaint with the Labor Board to get it and then she skipped a day of pay. I could fight her for the missing day and penalties for taking so long, but I am just going to skip it. I would have to take time from work, drive all the way down there, and go to court. I got most of it.

We got a crate for Gibby at the store yesterday. We have not had to leave him in it yet. He goes in it. We leave the door open. We put treats in there and he went in to get them. Yesterday while he was home alone (we were out buying the crate) he chewed up one of David’s socks. Monday the girls go back to school. No one will be home to baby-sit Gibby.

Having only two days off each week now, today was busy. I have been to the gas station, Wal-Mart, Boot Barn, and the post office. We did a little house cleaning. I plan to make chicken noodle for my Grandpa this weekend. Maybe I will do that tomorrow. Maybe my mom will let me wash a load of laundry at her house while I am there making chicken noodle. That way I will have clean slacks for my workweek. We do not start wearing uniforms yet.

That is it for now.

These Boots Were Made For Walkin'

Today was long. We learned a lot today. My head is very full. I am enjoying my new job. A few things that I am not liking though. They told us that they would be issuing us boots and a uniform allowance. They told us we needed to buy uniforms and wear them by Friday of next week. Now she says there is a bit of a backlog and she has no idea when we might get boots and the uniform allowance will not come until next Thursday or Friday. However, we still need to have uniforms by next Friday. You cannot just go out to the store and buy them; you have to order them from a catalog. The boots I can go buy at a store. (I spoke to Nicole about where to get boots. She buys work boots for my brother.) None of this stuff is cheap either. The other part I do not like about this situation, they still have not told us which uniforms we need. There are three catalogs full of different stuff. I do not know what I need right away and what I do not need and what is optional. That is a moot point for now though, since even if I knew what to buy, the six dollars in my bank account is not going to cut it. David is paid on Friday of next week. I have thirty dollars sitting on the table for gas money and bus fare to last until then; I will not get my first paycheck until the 29th. It is not as if they are trying to make this difficult. It is just that they are short handed in general and the entire staff is going through a yearly training thing so that makes it worse.

Oh well, I am sure I will work it out. All of my bills are caught up and I will get a nice bonus. (Though I heard that taxes would take a big part of my bonus.) By the end of this month, I should be on track and going forward with everything taken care of.

In other news, Carolynn and Catherine both did pretty well with the chores today. Yesterday did not go so well. Monday they did fine because my mom was here watching them. Yesterday they were on their own. David was here for part of the day, so the kitchen was cleaned and a few things were done. However, Catherine was not even dressed and her room had not been cleaned in days. Today when I got home, and I got home early unexpectedly, her room was clean and she was dressed. Many other chores were done too. I taught Carolynn how to make chili for dinner. I packed some to take for lunch tomorrow. David has tomorrow off. He will be home with the girls all day.

There really is very little to tell about my new job. There are no pictures allowed. Not even of the outside. However, you can see it if you check the website. I am not allowed to tell you much about what I do, but that is just the way it goes. Perhaps tomorrow I can post a recipe or something. I know… soaps. Tomorrow I will tell you about the soaps. Maybe. If I remember. I think.

Until tomorrow…

Day 2

There is a lot to learn at this job. You are responsible for people's lives. There are policies and procedures to learn. It is hard, but I am enjoying the challenge. There are 11 people in the class. But not everyone of them are training to become officers like me. Most are though. Two are doctors, one medical and one psychology. One is a receptionist. The rest of us are correctional officers. There are 3 women, including me. Everyone is pretty nice. In fact, every person I have met who works there is very nice. There is a huge amount of "family" there. I never had a job like that. Actually, I never had any kind of job even remotely like this before. Importing baskets for a jerk ass boss is not anything like this. Running cheese shops is not either.

I bring my lunch and eat with the class. Today I had leftover mac and cheese form last night.

After work today, I went for groceries. We had burgers for dinner. Tomorrow we are making chili. That will make good leftovers for lunch too.

Ahhh

I'm running out of things to right.

Fun

Today was fun Grandma came over and we went out. Catherine got a hair cut. I also got Wenershnichal. Then I cooked chicken and mac & cheese it was good!

And So It Begins

Today was my first day at my new job. It was a long day. They are throwing a lot of information out at me. For the next two weeks, I will be attending training classes. After that, I will be doing a shadowing program, and then I will attend 3 weeks at a training camp in Georgia. Then once I complete my year probation, bam… I am in for good.

Today we did a lot of administrative papers. We picked insurance, retirement, savings… We learned about employee conduct. We were sworn in as officers of the law. It was interesting. I heard many stories. I cannot repeat them though, because they are not for public knowledge. I met some interesting people, some interesting in a good way, some not so much. Tomorrow we really begin training. We will learn policies and about inmates. Next week they are going to teach me how to shoot stuff. I have such a cool job.

The girls spent the day with my mom since David was at work all day too. They got Catherine a hair cut, ate hot dogs, and went to a movie. My mom also made sure they did chores and helped Carolynn make dinner. I had thawed some chicken thighs. Carolynn did an oven bbq on them and she made a nice homemade mac and cheese. All of it was very good and I will be taking some for lunch tomorrow. It was very nice to come home and have someone else make the dinner. Carolynn was very proud of herself too.

I spent most of this evening filling out all that paperwork, picking insurance and assigning beneficiaries. It was a very tiring day.

Tomorrow I get to do it again. I am so excited.

Camera Critters

Camera Critters

Gibby is a critter and he is cute. He is mom's dog.

Broken

Yesterday, while we were putting away our Christmas stuff, Carolynn dropped a White Christmas snow globe and it broke. I was sad to see it go. I had that for a long time. I got it in an Avon catalog probably in 2000. Carolynn felt bad. It was an accident. A couple of weeks ago, we were in the Wal-Mart picking out one new ornament for the tree. We try to get a new one every year. We picked one out and Carolynn got it off the rack. About 3 seconds later, we heard a crash and there was Carolynn looking down at the broken ornament. Luckily, they had another one.

We had another tragedy here in the house today. We left for a while, only about an hour and a half, and when we came back, we discovered Gibby had chewed the hand off Catherine’s Sharpay doll. He had also chewed up the boots she was wearing, which actually belonged on Catherine’s Hannah Montana doll. When we leave, we make sure all the bedroom doors are closed, because when Gibby is mad, he chews stuff up. Gibby always is mad when we go somewhere and do not take him. I had taken Sharpay away from Catherine as punishment for not cleaning her room. I forgot it was in the living room. And yes, in case you were wondering, Gibby has lots of toys and chew stuff. He usually chews those when we are home.

Today is my last day unemployed. Tomorrow morning I begin a new career. Today we are cleaning up. I went over and used my dad’s printer (ours is not working) to print out chore charts. It seems to be helping. I wanted to be sure that it was up for this week since I will be gone. The children still have another week of vacation. The McDonald’s has David working 6 days a week now. It should be a pretty busy week.

I made tuna salad for sandwiches to take to work for my lunch. I hunted down my travel teacup to take too. I have my kettle ready to turn on in the morning. I have my clothes all picked out and my alarm all set.

This is going to be a new start. This is going to be good.

Would You Like Fries With That?

Last night, the McDonald’s that David works at was out of French Fries. People were yelling at him all night. They were also out of salads, parfaits, barbecue sauce and buffalo sauce. That is the most ridiculous thing I ever heard. How can McDonald’s be out of fries? This is not the first time that David has been working there and they were out of something. They are frequently out of ice cream and shakes. One day they were all out of regular hamburger patties. Another day they were all out of buns. At one point, they only had small cups. People are always calling in sick or just plain not showing up. Then they are understaffed and slow. Throw in the out of fries… and there are many angry customers. I don’t think $8.00 is enough to take that kind of abuse. David is still actively looking for a different job. New things are opening up soon; Sonic, Jack In The Box, a movie theater, Red Robin, Buffalo Wild Wings. Maybe he can get in on that. The Mervyn’s went out of business, but they will be opening Kohl’s there before too long.

There was not much excitement here today. We took our cans and bottle to the recycling center. We went to the bank to get the check for the rent. (I told you I would work it out.) We took down our Christmas decorations. The garage door is fixed again, so we cleaned out the garage and I put my car back in there. Later we will have chicken fried steak for dinner. I know, we are so wild party animals.

Photo Hunt: Hope

Ever since David got a waffle maker for Christmas, every day I hope he makes waffles for breakfast.

Year End Meme

I got this off of Trisha's blog. I hate these and she loves them. But I need to do stuff to fill up my time, so here you have it.

1. What did you do in 2008 that you’d never done before? Applied for unemployment

2. Did you keep your new years’ resolutions, and will you make more for next year? Hmm… I cannot remember what my resolutions were for last year. Probably to move somewhere better and lose weight. I did the first and a little of the second. This year I am trying to learn not to bite my nails and do good at my new job.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth? Nope, but this year I will have a new nephew.

4. Did anyone close to you die? Not this year

5. What countries did you visit? Just the one I live in. I mostly stayed in California but we did go to Las Vegas in September.

6. What would you like to have in 2009 that you lacked in 2008? A job, which I have, and did not have in 2008

7. What date from 2008 will remain etched upon your memory, and why? July 1 was the day we moved here. Trisha’s visit in March was very memorable. My Grandpa getting hit on by a hooker in Las Vegas was pretty memorable too.

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year? I got a job. I also got an AA degree, but that seems less important than the job.

9. What was your biggest failure? It took me way too long to find a job.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury? Maybe a cold or something

11. What was the best thing you bought? Probably my iPod and Gibby. Though technically my mom bought both of those.

Where’d 12 and 13 go??

14. Where did most of your money go? Money? What money?

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about? Let’s see.. Trisha’s visit, moving, and my new job.

16. What song will always remind you of 2008? Phat Cat Swinger

17. Do you have a plan of attack for 2009? Hell yes

18. Compared to this time last year, are you richer or poorer? Poorer… but not for long.

19. What do you wish you’d done more of? Saving

20. What do you wish you’d done less of? Stressing out

21. How did you spend Christmas? With my family, which I never do because I usually live too far away. We went to my brother’s on Christmas Eve, Chris, Sherri and Taylor’s on Christmas and my mom’s on Christmas and was still home to open presents on Christmas morning and home for Christmas dinner.

22. Did you fall in love in 2008? Nope, I haven't met George Clooney yet.

23. What’s your biggest regret of 2008? Hmm… I don’t know. Moving sucked, but it worked out in the end and was the right thing to do. I guess I regret not saving more.

24. What was your favorite TV program? Probably CSI

25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn’t hate this time last year? Mostly, I still hate the same jerkasses, but there is a pet shop owner who I didn’t know last year who I really don’t like.

26. What was the best book you read? I only read two. Love In The Time Of Cholera was way better than Happiness Sold Separately.

27. What was your greatest musical discovery? iPod

28. What did you want and get? A job

29. What did you want and not get? A million dollars and world peace

30. What was your favorite film of this year? Mamma Mia

31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you? I was 31 and it was Easter Sunday. We made ham and hunted eggs.

32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying? If I had gotten a job 6 months ago… Telling off my old boss. Yes sir, you are in fact a world class jerk ass.

33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2008? Fashion concept… hmmm… How about if it’s clean, wear it?

34. What kept you sane? Medication

35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most? The rich and single ones

36. What political issue stirred you the most? Prop 8

37. Whom did you miss? Trisha, maybe my sister a little

38. Who was the best new person you met? Nicole

39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2008. Saving is important

40. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year. How about Pink’s So What?

Dog Days

Keeping the house clean is quite a challenge. David has worked everyday this week, but he manages to keep the kitchen tidy. Unfortunately, the children are not doing their share. Catherine takes several days to clean her room, and does nothing else in the mean time. Carolynn doesn’t do anything unless I make her, then she does this whole “Cinderella” act like I am forcing her into hard labor during her every waking moment. She does not clean her room either. Today is the last day of our first week of the chore chart. I guess when I total it all up tomorrow and start handing out the rewards; they will not be as fabulous as they had hoped. Perhaps that will make next week go more smoothly. That will be good because next week I will be at work.

The days seem so long as we approach my first day of my new job. I am trying to fill them up. Yesterday I went shopping with my mom and the girls. We looked at tiny little baby thing for my soon to be nephew. We got tiny little sports socks for the little guy. Then we went out for some Mexican food and some margaritas. Last night the girls, David, and I watched Kung Fu Panda. Catherine got it for Christmas. It was very funny and very cute. Jack Black was amazing in that movie.

Today I did some cleaning. I ate a grilled cheese. I did some reading. I am going to make some more of my cinnamon and brown sugar Chex mix. I will fix dinner later. I am just trying to make the time go by so I can go to work.

Scary

One of my favorite bloggers, Red Lotus Mama, tagged me for this meme. Then I was tagged by a new blog friend, Lolita Carrico, whom I met through the Modern Mom Challenge. It was Red Lotus Mama who told me about that and got me to join.

Anywho...

Here's the meme.

Here are the rules:
1) Take a picture of yourself right NOW!
2) DON’T change your clothes, DON’T fix your hair… Just take a picture.
3) Post that picture with NO editing.
4) Post these instructions with your picture.
5) Tag 10 people to do this.

So be prepared, this is what I look like in the morning. I am wearing jammies, holding down my dog and I haven't showered. I don't wear make-up anyway so that was no big deal. Here we go.

Happy New Year!

I didn't quite make it until midnight last night. I did make it until midnight eastern and central time. 2009 is finally here. 2009 is going to kick 2008's ass. However, 2008 didn't totally blow chunks. Here is a highlight of some of the best parts. There were many more, but it's only a three and a half minute song. Anyway, enjoy a look back at 2008. Welcome 2009!
