Riding The Polar Express

Last night both of the girls had performances at school. Carolynn is in the band and Catherine is in the chorus. David went to Carolynn’s thing and I went to Catherine’s thing. David said it was terrible. It was unorganized, the kids barely got to play, and very few came. He took a camera, but didn’t get any pictures. Next semester Carolynn will not be in the band.

Catherine’s performance was cute. The kids sang for 30 minutes. They sang a variety of holiday songs. Several from The Polar Express. That was their theme for Holiday Fun Night last week too. I had a working camera last night and last week at Holiday Fun Night. So here are a few pictures.

Catherine and her friend Rebe at Holiday Fun Night.

Catherine's Chorus

And here is a video of them singing a song called Hot Chocolate from The Polar Express.

Anyway, we are getting ready for our Holiday Game Night and Ornament Exchange. I have plenty of soda, some finger foods, paper plates and napkins. We have the ornaments wrapped. We are ready for fun.

I have all of my holiday gifts purchased. I still have quite a bit of baking still to do.

David is out bell ringing. Tomorrow is my night to ring. We are not doing it as much as we did last year. We don’t have as much time. I feel bad that we can’t give more, but at least we give something.

Anyway, that is all for tonight. I am watching the finale of So You Think You Can Dance.

Angels We Have Heard On High

I have three days off this week. Really this time. I mean it. It should be glorious. Today I went to the post office to get stamps to send the rest of my Christmas cards. They all went out today. The old folks in the post office are very chatty. Then I went to the Wal-Mart to get something to pack all the Christmas goodies in. I am doing a little baking this week for our Holiday Game Night. I will do most of my baking for presents next week so they are fresh.

Speaking of Holiday Game Night…

This Saturday, December 19, we are having a Holiday Game Night and Ornament Exchange. If I didn’t send you a personal invite, do not be alarmed. You are totally invited. Just email me, Facebook me, text me, call me… Whatever. It’s going to be fun. In actuality, it was Tabi and Kathy’s idea for the game night and ornament exchange. We are going to have lots of appetizer type foods. I am making my Aunt Pavena’s yummy eggrolls. I know Jackie is bringing deviled eggs. I am baking some cookies; peanut butter, snowballs, sugar cookies and maybe chocolate chip. It is going to be just what I needed to get into the holiday spirit. Friends, fun, Christmas cookies, and ornaments… So come on down.

Next week I will do more holiday baking; Cookies and fudge and Grandpa’s Gum Drop cake. Tonight I am making spaghetti and meatballs with garlic bread. Later the girls will be in some holiday programs at their schools. Yes, each one at her respective school, at the same time. Carolynn will be playing in her holiday band concert and Catherine will be singing in her school’s choir concert. David will be attending Carolynn’s band concert and I will be attending Catherine’s choir concert. There will be pictures.

If there is time for movies tonight after the concerts, we will be enjoying Mickey’s Christmas Carol. David really wants to watch A Muppet Christmas Carol. Everyone wants to see Jim Carrey in the new Christmas Carol. It’s my favorite Christmas story. (But my favorite Christmas movie has more to do with a Red Rider Air Rifle.)

Anyway, I have to go get the meatballs going.

Merry Christmas.

Friends… God’s Way Of Making Up For Your Family

And if you knew my family… Let’s just say the nut doesn’t fall far from the tree. And there are a lot of nuts in that tree.

But let’s not get into that. Today we are talking about friends. I admit I am not a good friend. I forget birthdays or holidays. I don’t call and I don’t email. I suck. It’s probably why I haven’t had a lot of friends over the years. But now I seem to have some. And I really like it. I certainly have a diverse bunch of friends too.

There has always been Trisha. Since forever ago when we were just a couple of bored housewives with small children… I just don’t know what I would do without her. No matter what happens she is always there ready to help me hide the body or just listen while I whine. It doesn’t matter where I live; she is always a phone call, email, or text message away. She came all the way out here last year to visit. She and the whole family drove down to see me when I was in Georgia. Next year they are moving out here and I could be any happier about it. (I am sure her family in Ohio is disappointed, but tough.) She is like a sister to me. As far as I am concerned, her family is my family.

Lately I have been adding some new and old friends to my life. It makes me a lot happier. I didn’t realize how much.

Jackie and I were friends from elementary school. We talked off and on here and there after high school, but nothing major. Since moving up here though, we have reconnected through Facebook (seriously Facebook, I love you.) and it has been wonderful. We have gotten together a bunch of times. I have been out to her house in Barstow. We went to a concert in the park over the summer. We have game nights that are so fun. Her husband, Alan is also the nicest guy. I didn’t even know him and he offered to fix David’s truck over the summer. And now that my car is having trouble he is willing to help me with that. His sister is a hoot. I met her at their house. Their nieces are adorable. They have been here to our house and we saw them at Jackie’s too. It has been a blessing to find Jackie again. Just two days ago, I wrote about my Bah-Humbug spirit, and I come out of work to two very encouraging texts from her. I can only wish I were as good of a friend as she is.

And where I found Jackie, I also found Tabi. Tabi and I met when I was a junior in high school. I didn’t see or hear from her again after I graduated. However, Jackie and Tabi were Facebook friends and of course knew each other from school and that enabled Tabi and I to reconnect. Tabi is such a caring person. She is fun to be around. She has two adorable little boys. And of course with Tabi, you get her partner Kathy. She is just as nice. She is a great mom and a kind and compassionate person. They make a great pair. I am very lucky to have them both in my life. They also come to game nights. We have been to their house for game night too. They joined us for the concert in the park. It has been wonderful. They are always talking about moving to the East coast. I certainly would miss them.

I managed to reconnect with a couple of other old friends via Facebook. Sarah, who I was friends with from junior high, I got a chance to hang out with her at the home of another old friend, Jamie. We played Bunco, which was fun, and it was so nice seeing them again. Sarah is still so sweet and wonderful. Almost too sweet…. No, just kidding. I am so glad I got to see her. Jamie I think I met in junior high. Whatever it may have been, I am glad I did. She has a lovely home and a very nice husband. I am so glad that whatever a jerk I was in high school, and I am sure I was a jerk, isn’t keeping them from being my friends now.

Most recently, Paula managed find me via Facebook. We were the best of friends in high school. We went to a homecoming dance together. I am pretty sure my mom liked her better than she liked me. We were still in contact after high school for a long time. She came to my baby shower. I sent a gift for her wedding since I couldn’t make it. I went to see her right after she had her first daughter. I sent her packages when she took on her sister’s child as a foster child. But a few years ago, she lost her job and moved, then I moved and we lost touch. Luckily, the internet has come to the rescue again. (If I could, I would totally marry Facebook.)

Of course not all of my new friends are old friends found. Mary and Tonya are two of the nicest people I know. I met them at Chris and Sheri’s house at Taylor’s birthday. I have the privilege of being Facebook friends with Mary (because it won’t let me friend Tonya). They have great kids. They are easy to be around. We spent Thanksgiving with them and even though David and I were too sick to really enjoy all the yummy food, we really loved spending the holiday with them. I am so glad we met.

Just so you don’t think I don’t like all my other Facebook friends and other casual acquaintances… I do appreciate all of you too. I know a lot of people from work too who are great. I didn’t realize how few people I knew before, until I knew so many like now.

**************

Anyways, all this talk about friends has put me in a much better mood. I am not quite a jolly old St. Nick yet, but I am much less Mrs. Scrooge. I am watching a Christmas movie with Carolynn. We are making burritos. Later we are going to Catherine’s school for Holiday Fun Night. Then we will bake cookies and watch more Christmas movies. I will get into the holiday spirit if it kills me.

I also discovered I had one more maintenance on my car, so I will be taking my car in on Tuesday so I can be sure what is wrong with it and get the oil changed. That should give me a little help in stress relief.

Also, I worked a couple of overtimes this week so that will help with some upcoming stuff. Plus I had a few overtimes that I hadn’t gotten paid for that I will soon. Then that will help too. I am reducing the stress, which in turn is boosting the Christmas spirit.

Happy Holidays!

Merry Cow Christmas

Moo

Let It Snow

Yesterday was a stormy day. It snowed off and on all day. Nothing stuck. The wind howled. The lights flickered. The Christmas lights are now falling off the house. It was so cold. It is still cold. I have to work tonight. It is going to be super cold. I know it. At least the weather is Christmas-y.

I am still having trouble getting in the Christmas spirit. My car is a piece of crap. Seriously. I hate it. If I don’t have to go to work, I am not driving it. Not until I can afford the repairs. Why do cars find the most inappropriate times to break? I still have bills to pay and Christmas presents I want to buy.

Here’s another added stress for you… Drizella has been digging out. She digs out and Gibby goes with her. She knows she is bad. When we catch her she slinks back and won’t come close to us. I don’t know what to do about her. Frankly, she isn’t a very good dog. She doesn’t listen. She steals food. She chews stuff up. She bites. And she digs. What am I supposed to do? If animal control finds her, we will get a big ticket and the added expense. Just what I needed right now…

And one more suck-fest to add to my Bah-Humbug spirit… Knott’s Berry Farm is free for me and the family until the 20th. It’s free for all law enforcement officers. I knew it was coming and we had been looking forward to it. But now, it looks like we won’t be going. Even though it is free to get in, we’d still have to pay for gas, parking, food (you have to get Mrs. Knott’s Chicken Dinner), and maybe a souvenir or two. And with my stupid car being stupid, I wouldn’t try and drive it that far anyway until it is repaired.

Okay, sorry I am such a Scrooge. I am trying not to be. We are thinking about having a New Year’s Eve party. A long time ago, I used to throw a New Year’s Eve party every year. At the time, we had this grouchy neighbor who called the cops on us at about 10:30 PM. Every year. We were never that loud. She was just a Scrooge herself. Then for a long while, I had no one to invite to any sort of party. Now I do. And if my work schedule continues in the way it is, I will have New Year’s Eve off. So keep a look out for party e-vites. (They are cheap.)

Here is some more good news… Yesterday I talked to my friend Paula. I had not talked to her for a couple of years. She moved and lost her job and I lost contact. But thanks to Facebook (again) she found me again and we talked last night. She is going through some rough times too, but like me she is working through it. Her husband is having trouble finding a job right now. I suggested he apply where I work. At least it is something.

Well, I guess that is it. I have to get ready for work soon. I will take my Scrooge attitude to prison. I am sure the inmates will enjoy.

Merry Christmas To All.

It’s Beginning To Look A Lot Like Christmas

We got our tree up. It is so much larger than the old tree. We got all of our holiday decorations up and even got lights up on the outside of the house. Last year we had a tiny tree and one strand of lights around the window. This year we have lights around the window and all along the front of the house. It looks pretty good. When we lived in our apartment we put lights on our porch, around the window, and on the palm tree by the porch. Since they cut down the dead tree in the yard, our yard looks better and you can see our pretty lights.

I have been listening to a lot of Christmas music. It is helping my Christmas spirit. Now we are watching some Christmas movies. We watched Christmas With The Kranks. I liked it. It stuck with the book pretty well. That is a rarity. Then we watched Home Alone. That is a classic Christmas movie.

I wrote out all my Christmas cards. I hope everyone likes them because it is all you are getting for Christmas this year. I hope I had everyone’s correct address.

I made beef stroganoff for dinner. I made two lunches worth too. I am saving so much by making my own lunches. It’s really great. And my lunches are so much tastier and healthier when I make my own.

That is all for now.

UHHHHHHHH...

Its cute and cool.

CHRISTMAS

23 days until Christmas.Well that's all I have to say.Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh...

For Whom The Bell Tolls

Yesterday we had our Thanksgiving feast. I was so stuffed. We had turkey, mashed potatoes, green bean casserole, corn, rolls, stuffing, and cranberry sauce. We had apple pie and pumpkin pie. We had sparkling cider. It was all so good.

Last night I went and did some bell ringing. I gave up 2 hours in front of the K-Mart. I am not a fan of ringing in front of the K-Mart. First of all, when I ring at the Stater Bros., I see people I know. Families come and buy groceries. There is a security guard around. Police eat at the Subway and there are usually a few police cars. At K-Mart, there are hoodlums hanging about. There are old cars, people waiting for the bus, people taking advantage of the layaway plan. There are people on the pay phones. The only people I see I recognize are people who come to my work to visit inmates. It’s not that K-Mart is a ghetto store in and of itself, but this K-Mart is. It is in an old run down shopping center. Most of the shops are vacant and the few left include a cigarette store and a payday loan place. People come in and out in old jammies and slippers.

Of course some of the people who ring those bells are just super special. Who can forget those fabulous people I met last year? Last night I went to relieve a girl at K-Mart. She was expecting David. I told her he wasn’t coming and I was taking his place. She started to complain that if they were handing out extra hours, she wanted them. David doesn’t even get paid. I told her I wasn’t either. She went on a tirade about how stupid that is. Why would David or I give up our time and not get paid? Yep. It got better too. She was mad about having to take the bus to and from and said she had been told the Salvation Army provides rides to and from the sites. Then she mentioned that the “house mom” from the halfway house where she lived might come pick her up. Yep. She was a treat. When they finally came to switch out kettles, she left to catch her bus. I was happy to see her go.

It was cold out there last night. Not too many people either. I collected around $30. And I saved them from having to pay someone for a couple of hours.

Today we are cleaning. I got all the Thanksgiving décor packed up and we are waiting on the girls to get home to start the decorating. I had some pumpkin pie. I am going to bake cookies. Maybe I should take some to Aunt Chris since she isn’t able to do her Christmas decorating yet. Her house is more suitable for Halloween right now. I am making some chocolate spritz cookies, chocolate chip cookies and peanut butter cookies. It will give the house a nice holiday feel. In another week or so I will make a nice gumdrop cake for my grandpa. My mom will top it with rum and it will be good stuff. I will also have to make the snowball cookies. That was a grandma classic.

I don’t suppose anyone is interested in game night tonight? I figured since it was a Wednesday, people would be busy. That is one bad thing about working weekends. Everyone else is off when you have to work. It wasn’t so bad when I worked until 2, but now I work until 5.

I wrapped what presents I had bought already. It is the only way to keep the kids from finding them. So far they each have 6 presents. Plus there is a present for Allison. I have to finish my shopping. First I have to get money.

If A Picture Is Worth 1000 Words…. I Have Nothing To Say

I used to take hundreds of pictures. Every day, everywhere we went I was snapping pictures. I’d make videos of them set to music. I haven’t done that in a while. I haven’t been taking pictures anymore. I don’t know why not. I think maybe it is because I have been doing things more with friends. My family is used to my camera all up in their business. Perhaps I worry what my friends might think.

I am going to try and take more pictures. I will try and get them up so I can share them. I think it is important to document life. It is important to remember all the happy times and even the not so happy times. They are what make life worth living.

Today is Thanksgiving #2 here at our house. Thanksgiving #1 was pretty awesome in company and fun times, but in eating ability, it blew. The food was so good, but the stomach flu was not. So today we are enjoying the food. I baked a pumpkin pie and now I have an apple pie going. Rolls are rising on the kitchen table. Bottles of sparkling cider are chilling in the refrigerator. Green bean casserole is in the works. David scrubbed down the kitchen so I would have clean space to work and he is cleaning up the house a bit so I have 1 less thing to stress over. He even went to the store for me.

Our Christmas tree is in place. It is so big and decorating it tomorrow will be fun. We got lots of new decorations at the Wal-Mart after New Years. Seriously… we got light sets for a dime and boxes of ornaments for a quarter. I have one of my many Christmas shirts on. This one is red and has penguins wearing festive sweaters, holding gifts and snowflakes around. I have one with Rudolph on it and the nose really lights up. David bought Christmas candy when he went to the store and chocolate is always a good idea.

More good news… My friend Jackie called and said her husband Alan may be able to help with my car situation which could really save us a lot of money. That would be a lifesaver. Now if I could just get that bank to give me back my money in bank fees…

I am thinking about switching banks. I liked it better before it changed. The new rules and fees suck. They closed my savings because I didn’t have enough in there. They charged me for the service too. They charge me a $6 monthly fee for I don’t know what. The only thing I like is their online banking. A lot of people have been saying nice things about Desert Community Bank. It’s local. Maybe it would be a good change.
